Ajay Devgn returns as Vijay Salgaonkar when Drishyam: The Conclusion reaches cinemas on October 2, bringing the Hindi franchise to its third and final chapter. The Indian Express reported that the Abhishek Pathak-directed film arrives with unusually strong advance sales, positive reactions from trade analysts and the advantage of opening on a national holiday without another major Bollywood release alongside it.

The film reunites Devgn with Tabu, Shriya Saran, Ishita Dutta, Rajat Kapoor and Kamlesh Sawant, while Jaideep Ahlawat and Prakash Raj join the cast, according to The Indian Express. The new instalment continues Vijay and his family's story after Drishyam 2, with another threat emerging around the secret the Salgaonkars have spent the series protecting.

Key facts before the October 2 release

  • The Indian Express reported that Drishyam: The Conclusion is the third and final Hindi film in the franchise and releases in cinemas on October 2.
  • The Indian Express said Abhishek Pathak directs, with Ajay Devgn, Tabu, Shriya Saran, Ishita Dutta, Rajat Kapoor and Kamlesh Sawant returning.
  • Jaideep Ahlawat and Prakash Raj are new additions to the cast, The Indian Express reported.
  • Sacnilk figures reported by The Indian Express put extended opening-weekend advance bookings at nearly Rs 38 crore including blocked seats and Rs 28.49 crore excluding them.
  • The same report said Day 1 advances had crossed Rs 19 crore, with more than 11 lakh tickets sold across around 36,000 shows.
  • The Indian Express reported that the film has a solo major Bollywood release window on the October 2 national holiday.

A different path from the Malayalam series

The Conclusion marks a significant structural change for the Hindi Drishyam films. The Indian Express reported that while the first two Hindi instalments were remakes of the Malayalam Drishyam films starring Mohanlal, the third Hindi chapter follows its own story rather than continuing on the same narrative path.

At the trailer launch, Devgn described the film as having a “completely different script”, The Indian Express reported. He said the earlier Hindi films had been inspired by their Malayalam counterparts but that the third film takes an entirely different route rather than making minor alterations to an existing version.

Devgn also spoke at FICCI Frames about reaching out to Mohanlal because of that divergence. The Indian Express quoted him as saying he wanted Mohanlal to see the film because “this time we have diverted [the story] completely”. Devgn said he felt an approval from Mohanlal “would be nice” and added that the Malayalam star, who was on holiday, had continued interacting and was expected to watch the film soon.

Advance sales put the opening in focus

The advance-booking numbers have placed the opening day at the centre of industry attention. Sacnilk data reported by The Indian Express showed nearly Rs 38 crore generated for the extended opening weekend when blocked seats were included, compared with Rs 28.49 crore excluding those seats. Day 1 advance sales had crossed Rs 19 crore.

The same figures showed more than 11 lakh tickets sold across approximately 36,000 shows, with Delhi-NCR among the strongest markets. The Indian Express said the national holiday and absence of another major Bollywood release on October 2 are favourable factors, while also noting that the final first-day total will depend on actual footfalls after cinemas open.

How the reported opening estimates compare

SourceReported opening view
The Indian ExpressTrade expectations have placed opening-day potential in the Rs 40 crore-plus range, subject to actual footfalls.
Girish JoharThe Indian Express reported his prediction of Rs 35 crore to Rs 40 crore.
Vishwajit PatilThe Indian Express reported his Rs 55 crore-Rs 57 crore nett prediction, with Rs 60 crore nett described as possible with strong spot bookings.
Sumit KadelThe Indian Express reported his view that the film would open above Rs 45 crore and could reach Rs 55 crore.
Joginder TutejaThe Indian Express reported his assessment that a Rs 50 crore-plus day was shaping up comfortably.

Girish Johar also pointed to the overseas scale of the release. The Indian Express quoted him as saying the international buzz had been “extraordinary” and that the film would play on more than 1,300 screens across 60 countries. Johar described it as Ajay Devgn's biggest overseas release.

Vishwajit Patil, meanwhile, cited the pace of advance sales and the likelihood of heavy spot bookings on the Gandhi Jayanti holiday when setting his higher estimate. Sumit Kadel also framed the opening in terms of the murder-mystery thriller genre, while Joginder Tuteja highlighted audience interest in seeing how the story ultimately ends, according to The Indian Express.

Early trade reaction backs the finale

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh gave the film an emphatically positive reaction ahead of release. The Indian Express reported that Adarsh wrote on X that the film “Lives up to the mammoth expectations” and called it the best film in the Drishyam franchise as well as one of the best films of 2026.

Adarsh praised Pathak for advancing the story “without recycling its formula”, according to The Indian Express. He identified the first-half confrontation between Devgn and Ahlawat as a major high point and described the finale as “powerful, gripping, and thoroughly fulfilling”.

His comments also singled out several performances. The Indian Express reported that he called Tabu “fabulous”, Prakash Raj “simply remarkable”, Shriya Saran “in super form” and said Rajat Kapoor brings “dignity and conviction” to his role. He added that while there is no room for songs in the narrative, the background score is “electrifying”.

Devgn and Pathak frame the film as the ending

Both the lead actor and director have presented The Conclusion as an endpoint rather than another link in an indefinitely continuing series. At FICCI Frames 2026, Devgn said audiences would have to see whether Vijay Salgaonkar defeats the forces against him or is finally defeated himself, The Indian Express reported.

Devgn also said the series concludes with this film because writing a Drishyam story is difficult and the team wants to finish “on a high”. After seeing the film, he said his personal view was that it beats Drishyam 2, while adding that he was keeping his fingers crossed for the response.

Director Abhishek Pathak made a similar case in comments to PTI carried by The Indian Express. He said the team had reached a point where audiences would get a satisfying high from the film, and argued that making a fourth instalment by continuing to extract stories from the same characters and track would not be right for the franchise. “A trilogy is good,” Pathak said.

Audience interest extends back to Drishyam 2

The build-up has also driven renewed attention towards the previous chapter. Google Trends showed “drishyam 2” among India's top trending searches on October 1, with more than 2,000 searches as viewers revisited the earlier film before the finale.

The timing gives Drishyam: The Conclusion several converging factors on opening day: a holiday release, substantial pre-sales, a wide overseas footprint, strong initial commentary from trade observers and a story explicitly marketed through its status as Vijay Salgaonkar's final Hindi chapter. The Indian Express reported that the decisive box-office figure will still be determined by the audiences who turn those advance sales and opening-day interest into actual footfalls from October 2.
