Verified key facts

  • Multiple Tamil film trade reports on 14-15 July say Ajith Kumar will produce AK64 himself under a home banner, with wife Shalini overseeing production.
  • Adhik Ravichandran directs, reuniting with Ajith after Good Bad Ugly; TrackTollywood reported pre-production is underway with a shoot expected from August.
  • Anirudh Ravichander is reportedly on board to compose the music, per Pinkvilla.
  • Earlier reports, including Deccan Herald, had linked Romeo Pictures' Raahul to the project as producer.
  • No official announcement on title, banner, cast or crew has been made by the makers so far.

The reports: a home production for film number 64

Ajith Kumar's next film, tentatively titled AK64, may mark the biggest structural shift of his three-decade career. Tamil trade reports published on 14 and 15 July say the star will produce the film himself, through his own home banner. Only Kollywood reported that Shalini Ajith Kumar is set to steer the production side of the venture.

Per those reports, Shalini would oversee financial planning, production operations and day-to-day progress on the project. Tamil magazine Kumudam framed the development as a re-entry for the former actor, who stepped away from cinema after her marriage in 2000. None of this has been confirmed by the makers yet, and every outlet covering the story has flagged it as reportage.

The caution matters because AK64's production credits have moved around. Deccan Herald had earlier reported that Raahul of Romeo Pictures would produce the film. The newer reports suggest the project has since consolidated around Ajith's own setup. Until a formal announcement lands, the banner question stays technically open.

The Good Bad Ugly reunion

What is consistent across every report is the director. Adhik Ravichandran will helm AK64, his second collaboration with Ajith after Good Bad Ugly. TrackTollywood, reporting on 12 July, noted that the earlier film was celebrated by fans for its mass appeal and its stream of nostalgic references to Ajith's older hits.

That success is the foundation of this reunion. Good Bad Ugly gave Adhik the biggest opening of his career and gave Ajith a fan-service vehicle that travelled well beyond Tamil Nadu. A quick second film together is the industry's standard response to that kind of result.

TrackTollywood also reported that pre-production is moving at a brisk pace. Casting has begun, locations are being scouted, and the shoot is expected to start in August. The makers have not yet revealed the title, genre, supporting cast or technical crew.

Anirudh and the sound of a mass entertainer

Pinkvilla reported earlier that Anirudh Ravichander is likely to compose the film's songs and background score. Anirudh previously worked with Ajith on Vidaamuyarchi, and his involvement would slot AK64 firmly into event-film territory. His title tracks have become launch events in themselves for Tamil cinema's biggest stars.

The same set of reports describes AK64 as a mass commercial family entertainer, blending action and emotion for a wider audience than Good Bad Ugly's dark action template. Pinkvilla quoted the director's camp as promising several surprises in the packaging. As with the production details, the tonal brief remains unofficial.

Why a star-owned banner matters

If the reports hold, Ajith would be the latest major Tamil star to bring production in-house. Kamal Haasan has Raaj Kamal Films International, Suriya runs 2D Entertainment, and Dhanush operates Wunderbar Films. Star-owned banners change the economics of a film. The lead actor's fee stops being the largest line item and becomes equity in the project instead.

For a star of Ajith's scale, the shift also means control. Control over release timing, over satellite and streaming rights, and over how the theatrical revenue splits. Tamil cinema's top-tier salaries have climbed sharply in recent years, and producers have publicly worried about project viability. A home production sidesteps that tension entirely.

There is a family dimension too. Shalini taking an operational role would mirror a wider Kollywood pattern, where spouses and family members anchor star banners. Aishwarya Rajinikanth, Vignesh Shivan and Nayanthara's Rowdy Pictures, and Suriya and Jyotika's partnership at 2D all offer working templates.

An operational partner also solves a practical problem specific to Ajith. The star divides his year between cinema and competitive motorsport, and Only Kollywood has separately reported on his quiet return to racing this season. A trusted producer inside the family keeps the film moving through pre-production while the lead actor's calendar stays split.

The AK64 timeline so far

  • April 2025: Good Bad Ugly releases and becomes a fan favourite, setting up a reunion.
  • Early July 2025: Deccan Herald reports Romeo Pictures' Raahul as producer.
  • June 2026: Pinkvilla reports Adhik Ravichandran will direct AK64, with Anirudh likely on music.
  • 12 July 2026: TrackTollywood reports pre-production underway, shoot expected from August.
  • 14-15 July 2026: Only Kollywood and Kumudam report Ajith will produce via a home banner, with Shalini overseeing production.

What next

The immediate marker to watch is an official announcement. Tamil star vehicles of this scale usually confirm banner, title and crew with a single coordinated reveal, often timed to a festival date or the star's milestone days. With the shoot reportedly targeted for August, that confirmation window is narrow.

Casting is the second open question. No female lead or antagonist has been confirmed, and the genre brief will shape both choices. The third question is scale of release. A self-produced Ajith film arriving as his 64th project would be positioned as an event, and distributors across Tamil Nadu, Kerala and overseas will bid accordingly.

For now, the story is a snapshot of how Kollywood's biggest deals take shape: in increments, through trade reportage, before a single frame is shot. The substance will arrive with the announcement. The direction of travel, though, already looks clear.
